Crescent Valley High Team 955: Point System
Purpose
In the past the team has not been effective at raising funds or at community outreach. This proposal is designed to give the team the money it needs, when it needs it. Specifically
- Preferentially raise funds during the off season
- Set a target of $30,000. Adjust the target year by year based on what we learn.
- Reward participation by all the students on the team.
- Set the bar lower for freshman. We don't want to scare them away. And until folks attend a Regional they don't "get it".
Ways To Earn Points
- Fundraising earns points.
Types of Fundraising included in this category:
- Contacting company or individual sponsors and asking for a donation.
- Carwashes and Can drives
Events such as these must have at least 3 students involved. Larger groups are allowed. But notice that the larger the group the fewer points awarded per individual.
The dollar value of the donation will determine the number of points awarded, within limits.
- Materials which are donated will be treated as cash donations, but for one half the value.
- donation_value = material_value / 2
- Fundraising which returns more than $1000 will be awarded as though it returned exactly $1000.
- Fundraising which returns less than $300, or even nothing will be awarded as though it returned exactly $300.
- points_per_student = dollars_per_event / number_of_students
- Community Outreach Events Earn Points.
Community outreach includes such things as mentoring an FLL team and recruiting students at a school assembly. Unlike fundraising, we want to encourage large groups. So the points awarded per student will not be a function of the number of students attending. Community outreach events should have at least 3 students working on each. Students will not approach any of these alone.
- points_per_student = hours_in_attendance * 5
- Calling Restaurants For Meals Earn Points.
Calling restaurants for meals is treated separately since you can't get several kids on the phone at once.
- points_per_student = 20 points if food donated
- points_per_student = 2 points if no donation
- Meeting Attendance Earns Points.
Accounting for this, and other rewards above will be tied in with the hours accounting system J-N has written.
- points_per_student = hours_in_attendance * 1
Ways To Lose Points
- 20 Failing to clean up.
- 20 Refusing to do requested work.
- 100 Insubordination (first offense)
Rewards For Earning Points
- 500 pts: For rookies only: Attendance at regional or national events.
- 1500 pts: Attendance at regional or national events. Self funded.
- 1750 pts: Qualifies to be on the drive team.
- 2000 pts: Expenses paid by the team for attendance to the closest Regional event.
- 2500 pts: Expenses paid by the team for attendance to the second Regional event.
- 3500 pts: Expenses paid by the team for attendance to the National event.
Point Carryover To Next Year
If a student raises more points than he is rewarded for, he can carry half of the unused points into the next year. Unused points are calculated on the basis of events, not whether the student is on the drive team. Each robotic year ends on the day of the National Competition. For example: Student raises 4000 points. But the team does not qualify for Nationals. Student attends two regionals, expenses paid.
4000-2500 = 1500 points
Student can carry over 1500/2 or 750 points
Meeting The Team Objectives
If mentors find the fundraising goals are not being met, we may have to adjust the rules. Since this could cause students who were already qualified to be disqualified, it will have to be done with discretion. Below are the estimated team total points for next year.
- 3000 pts: hrs meeting attendance
- 3000 pts: fundraising no donation
- 20000 pts: fundraising with donation (expected $30,000 total)
- 2500 pts: outreach
- 190 pts: food
- ~30000 pts: TOTAL for team
