Barbara sketched a plan for the Gorillas In The Rex tree.

We covered the chickenwire frame with paper mache. We then glued brown fabric to the surface of the paper mache. Lastly we varnished the cloth to make it water resistant.
We rounded up dozens of gorillas.
Here is the completed tree.
Since Kelly and Barbara had never raced, they needed some training. At the end of June they did the water leg of the race.
Rex's chain hanger and bumper support tubes were damaged in Arcata. These pictures show the repair.
The far structure is the old, damaged design. The near structure is the newly rebuilt design. Trust me, its stronger.
Here both have been replaced.
Because the chain support geometry is now different, I needed to replace the crank. Here is the new crank. It has a 10% lower lowest gear than the old crank.
The two helmets on the newspaper are bike helmets. I ran spray foam around their periphery to get the shape of a pith helmet like the one to the upper left.
Since the latex spray foam I used turned out to be very flimsy, I covered it with paper mache to add strength.
Next I fitted the helmets with cloth covers.
The bribes that we use for the daVinci Days and later races will be necklaces. There will be beads on either side of a 'leaf'. The leaf will be of cloth like the ones on Rex. It will have an image of a gorilla on it. Here Clare is varnishing the leaves to give them strength and keep them fresh in the rain.
I ran some experiments to learn how to etch aluminum. That won't be ready for this year. But next year this may come in handy.
Unless otherwise noted, all pictures above were taken by Allen Brown.
