Recall that Monkey and Jim helped me repair some serious damage at the Arcata race earlier in the year. As a reward I planned to make some bronze gorilla heads to give to them at daVinci Days. Unfortunately, the OSU professor that I arranged this with never got around to his pouring. So I was unable to give the heads to these fine fellows. I can only hope that the pouring happens soon so that I can mail the heads to them. To make a bronze casting the wax sculpture is attached to a wax tree. The paper cup is at the top of the tree. It will form a 'cup' in the plaster investment casting for where the molten bronze will collect before flowing down into the tree. |

As part of the art judging we sing our song. This year our song was created by sisters Clare, Rachael, and Rebecca.

This machine is new this year. Not sure what this was called. When crossing difficult stuff like sand and mud it is designed to roll on that huge wheel. It does this by running the bike wheels inside the big wheel. That is a propellor with the checkerboard pattern above the machine. | ||

Jim and Lauren brought the 15 day wonder: Thunderbird. OK, it wasn't decorated at the 15th day. But it was raced at Arcata.

This startup team didn't get their machine finished. Some of us offered suggetions. We expect they will be back next year with a functional racer. Hopefully they will be able to reduce its weight considerably. |

Allen got a Hobart award. There's an irony to this. I got the award for finding funding for Monkey to bring Xperimental X-1 to daVinci Days. The irony is that Hobart Brown has just banned Monkey from the Arcata-Ferndale KSR race. Monkey was banned for criticizing Hobart and the Arcata-Ferndale race. Hobart then invoked a rule that had never been written down and had never been communicated to the KSR community. The whole affair seems inappropriate. And yes, by saying this I am criticizing Hobart Brown and the Arcata-Ferndale race. |
