DaVinci Days Kinetic Sculpture Race 2008

This year I was sick during most of the race. So I only saw a couple of hours of the festivities. And even then I wasn't totally there. Fortunately my team carried on without me. Heck, they did better that way. Maybe I should just stay out of their way!

Edward filled in as photographer for much of the time. I only took a few of the pictures featured here.

Art and Pagentry Judging -- July 18

Dave made an incredible song, complete with an instrumental sound track. I could not do it justice with a description. You will just have to imagine.

Sculptures!
Weld away!
Build a machine with good floats and you're OK.
Sculptures!
Use no gas.
Pass the pumps and guess what you keep your cash

Low gears, sand tyres Mud-cleat daydream
And a nice trip down stream.

Glory!
What it's for!
Bribe the judges, cheat, Leo, and getcha more
Sculptures!
They're a hit.
Don't get us stuck in Wendy B's Mud Pit.

We're in the low-velocity first class Kanga Rex set
Have we got the Glory yet?

Sculptures!
Get you grimed.
Fix a broke driveline and guess what yer hands are slimed!
Sculptures!
So they say.
Are the root of sunburn and blown knees today
But if you ask for a ride it's no surprise if
Team Rex gives them away!
Away!

I certainly was in the race
Yes absolutely in the race.
You were in the race and crusin' for a Leo.
Yeah!
Why do we do this?
I dunno I was stuck in the mud at the time.
I was just telling him, he couldn't get off
Ball-bearing beach he was asking for a push after I
was yelling and screaming and telling him Why do we do this? We really want a Leo.

I dunno, I was stuck in the mud at the time.

The Road and Sand Race -- July 19

palmtree This palmtree has shown up for a couple of years now. It can't really race, but it can parade.

Fifinix has been around forever in one form or another. Fifi is sponsored by the food cooperative in Arcata California.

The Mud and River Race -- July 20

All mud pictures are provided by Anne Kelley. I understand it was difficult; only 1/3 of the sculptures made it thru. But Dave and Anna succeeded!

Next it was on to the River.

I decided to ride the Spinner down the river ahead of KangaRex. Since the Spinner is so much slower than KangaRex, I needed a good head start. The pictures that follow were taken from within the Spinner.

Alas, the prop shaft on KangaRex broke when they entered the water. That took KangaRex from the fastest sculpture down to among the slowest. Dave and Anna used the oars as paddles, but that is no substitute for a propeller. And it is much more tiring. Anna was sore for days. In the words of Dave "Anna was La Magnifica!"

After the Race

I was still under the weather from my cold. And Dave was too tired. Fortunately Anna was up for giving a few rides in KangaRex. People also rode the Spinner.

The following movies are of Biking Viking. They are at the campground at night. There is not much light except for the flames coming from the dragon. [Videos by Edward Kropp.]

No kangaroos or dragons were harmed making this Kinetic Sculpture Racer.
