KangaRex Kinetic Sculpture Fact Sheet

Rex is a platform for our unRooly behavior.

While traveling down under Dave, Allen, and the rest of the crew encountered a Roo who adopted us as her Joeys. So now she races along with us, protecting us all the way. And we are the Roo Crew.

KangaRex Will Bounce Into Your Heart.

Q: What is KangaRex? A: KangaRex is the latest incarnation of Rex, a Kinetic Sculpture Racer. She is a 450 lb marsupial.
Q: What is a Kinetic Sculpture Racer? A: It is a human powered, all terrain, amphibious, racing parade float. We take KangaRex to numerous West coast events.
Q: What kinds of terrain do you race on? A: Roads. Off road. Deep mud. Soft sand.
Q: And it is amphibious? A: Oh, yes! We use inflatable pontoons. We have been in several rivers and lakes, Puget Sound, and the Pacific Ocean.
Q: Tell me about the mechanicals.
  • 450 lbs with full gear for a race but without decorations.
  • Three wheels. Front wheel drive. Rear steered/ruddered.
  • Each of the two pilots powers one wheel. 54 speeds per pilot.
  • Propeller drive in the water with a 14 inch prop.
  • Each pilot has a steering crank and has access to the brake handle. Thus either pilot can drive Rex.
  • Since the two pilots work largely independently, in case of breakdown of one side, repairs are sometimes possible while the other pilot continues to drive.
  • Two passenger seats in the back for children.
  • Roughly 10 MPH on the road. Roughly 5 MPH on water.
  • L=135 inch. W=62 inch. H=82 inch.
  • Lights: 2 headlights plus one spare, 3 taillights.
Q: I like the grill. A: So did the owner. It's a Subaroo grill.
Q: Do you take volunteers? A: Yes. We have been meeting 1 day/week for most of the year.
Q: How can I get more information? A: http://brown.armoredpenguin.com/~abrown/rex/
