Stevenson Washington is a small town located in the Columbia Gorge just east of the Portland-Vancouver area. They decided to have their first race this year during the Labor Day weekend. Stevenson is known for having more than their share of mosquitos. However, during the Labor Day weekend the mosquitos didn't show. The weather and everything was just excellent.

Racing

The Kinetic Sculpture race was quite small. So small that they had us run around it twice. This made for two short "road" trips, two water crossings, and a short mud crossing. It was fun and easy.

Rex pilots and crew That's me and Laura Allen. We are pilots of The Rex Files. Behind Laura is Giancarlo, our pit crew.
Rob Hitchcock Rob Hitchcock posing in front of his Chain Ring Lightning.
Kinetic Kop.
Alan Alan 'Rick O Shay' came down from Port Townsend to fill in as M.C.
Lampoons Lampoons.
Bantam Bantam Menace with his Pot Racer exiting the water.
Mud pit The mud pit was pretty easy. Not much more than water on dust. Muckle Flugga went around us in the dryest section, eliciting crys of 'cheating' from the spectators.
Goofy But even that was enough to stop Goofy Galleon.
Rex Files The Rex Files entering the water.

A short race such as this, with several short segments, makes slow transitions ineffective. Rex was at a distinct disadvantage for speed. We reduced the cost of transitions by leaving the off road tires on for the whole race. Possibly we could have raced on the road wheels the whole time as easily, and slightly faster. But we weren't much concerned with speed or with winning. We were just there for fun, and to try out the inflatible pontoons.

Muckle Flugga Muckle Flugga.
Bree Sharp Bree Sharp sang for us. She was suprisingly good. I hope she returns next year.

I didn't take notes on the awards. Everyone got something. We got a consolation prize. It was nice, including some CDs. I walked home with a Bree Sharp CD. Cool.
