TimeRex in the Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Race 1998

Last year was the first time in the Port Townsend Race history that it had rained during the race. It was just a sprinkle, but that was enough to break the string.

Improvements:

Before most races I can report on improvements to the machine. There were improvements this time, but they were pretty minimal. I added a CB radio and a AM/FM/Casette. I put more effort into repairing the damage that showed up at daVinci Days: the water drive and oar locks. I also replaced the main pontoon support tube. Since Arcata of this year it had gotten progressively more bent and unreliable.

Parade day:

It rained on our parade. But it was just a little bit and didn't make us uncomfortable. But I think the rain chased away some of our audience.

The Judge This Judge banged his gavel on our grill. Yes, THAT is a gavel.
TimeRex TimeRex water test. Lutefiske challenged us to a water race, so we took the opportunity to do this in a safe quiet spot. They beat us. I would guess they were about 10% to 20% faster than we were. Later I found out that Laura's chain wasn't driving the prop. So all our power was coming from me. I think we will have to have a rematch.

Race Day:

This year we were asked to create a song with a Motown theme. I'm not sure the judges enjoyed it since they stopped us before the finish. Not that any of us are complaining. Our singing was pretty awful.

TimeRex TimeRex about to roll into Puget Sound. After all the testing the night before, when we got back to the house we were adjusting the gears. At that point the main front strut support for the luggage rack broke. This was a serious problem and could not be fixed without a welder at the very least. We decided to remove the luggage rack and run the race without it. It took a bit of doing, but we found places for all the required equipment. We ran the road race with the pontoons in the position shown here. TimeRex is plenty stable this way. But at two feet wider, it is sometimes awkward. In Port Townsend those extra two feet are not really a problem.

TimeRex TimeRex has just exited Puget Sound. This year the water exit was really easy. I think it depends on how high the tides are. This year we exited onto paved ground.

Awards:

In past years there have been Master awards for teams that completed the race without pushing. This year that didn't happen. I heard no mention of it, and didn't think of it until afterwards. If the awards had been given, we would have gotten one.

Moxey Award We received one award: the Moxey award. This is for the crew that shows maximum gumption in the face of adversity, or something like that. For this we recieved a bath set. We also got a gift certificate at a music store.
Bribes Stuff from the race. Pilot wings, mini-Kinetic Chicken, Brake Check button, Fake money bribe, Ticket from Kinetic Kop, Dubloon from one of the pirate teams, Killer Tomato button. The bribes were traded from other teams.
