Rex the Kinetic Sculpture

Platypus Rex Platypus Rex 1996

The debut of the Rex Kinetic Sculpture machine was as Platypus Rex in 1996. Over the years, the machine will be improved many times. But significant portions will remain the same always.

Two years of TimeRex TimeRex from 1997 through 1998

It was as TimeRex that Rex Aced the Arcata race. After that we concentrated our efforts on the other Kinetic Sculpture Races.

The Rex Files The Rex Files 1999 through 2000

The Rex Files represented our first attempt to animate our artwork. It was our first inclusion of Barnacles in the races. This was also the first time we used inflatible pontoons.

Gorillas In The Rex Gorillas In The Rex 2001 through 2002.

Deep in Africa a tribe of primitive humans is found living among the gorillas. Did the gorillas adopt the humans? Or did the humans adopt the gorillas? Will we ever know?"

Frogasaurus Rex Frogasaurus Rex 2003 through 2006.

While working in the lab late at night, Allen Brown, David Neiman, and Meg Green accidentally crossed frog DNA with T-Rex DNA. Thus was spawned... Frogasaurus Rex! It's no longer safe to walk near ponds at night.

KangaRex KangaRex 2007 through 2009.

Never ones to pussy-foot around, the team jumped at the chance to create a kangaroo. Allen Brown, David Neiman, Karen and Fiona, and Anna created this bouncing mamma of the marsupial world.

Rex's death and memorial Rex's Death and Memorial

Rex's death has been predicted for many years. But he stubbornly hung on. Still, all things must come to an end. And the day after DaVinci Days 2009, I climbed up onto the main pontoon support tube, and the frame gave way.
